Woman accused of performing illegal surgeries in 'Sin City' arrested

A New York woman who was recently arrested in Las Vegas for performing an illegal cosmetic eyelid surgery may have other victims who have yet to be identified.

According to Fox 5 News, a neighbor reported the woman, 55-year-old Jing Qu, to police after he went to her home to complain about a parking issue and observed what appeared to be some sort of medical procedure being performed. When police arrived, the suspect was in the middle of performing an illegal cosmetic procedure on an anesthetized patient. Two other people who were present also appeared to be recovering from recent eyelid surgery.

KLAS-TV reports that one victim paid $1,800 for the cosmetic procedure and that police found $3,200 in Qu's purse, leading them to believe that there are more victims.

Qu told police that she is a licensed plastic surgeon in China, but does not have a license to practice in the United States.

Unfortunately, cases like this are not uncommon.

"Very frequently it's done in hotel rooms, I've heard of it being done in foot massage spas here in town," a Las Vegas-based plastic surgeon told Fox 5 News.

In October, a Colombian husband and wife each received eight-year prison sentences for their role in the death of a Las Vegas woman stemming from a botched plastic surgery. The duo was convicted of performing an illegal buttock augmentation surgery in the back room of a tile store.

Officials say the 42-year-old victim had an allergic reaction to the anesthesia she received before a buttock augmentation using injectable gel to reshape her rear end.

Experts say these cases highlight the need for patients to thoroughly research a plastic surgeon's credentials before allowing him or her perform any surgical or non-surgical procedures. Other things to consider include where the procedure will be performed and at which hospital the doctor has privileges.

Plastic surgery up for grabs at bridal expo

It's a sign that many brides-to-be are seeking out both surgical and non-surgical plastic surgeries in order to look their best on their wedding day. Allure magazine reports that a recent bridal expo featured a booth advertising liposuction and raffling off $400 worth of Botox injections.

"Many prospective brides - and grooms - get liposuction so they can look good in their gown and on their honeymoon," an Atlanta-based plastic surgeon told YourPlasticSurgeryGuide.com. "If you are planning to undergo liposuction before your wedding, do it about a month before to look great in your wedding gown. If you want to put on your bikini and show off your new figure, you need a month for bruising to go away, to be totally safe."

But liposuction isn't the only plastic surgery on many brides' pre-wedding makeover list. According to a recent article published in the British newspaper This Is Lancashire, many women are waiting until they're in their 30s or 40s before getting married and want a little help looking their very best for the big occasion.

Procedures such as Botox or Dysport injections, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion and chemical peels are quick ways for brides and bridesmaids to improve their appearance for a wedding. Often times, they're opting for more invasive procedures, too.

Body-contouring procedures such as a tummy tuck, arm lift or lower body lift as well as procedures such as breast augmentation and breast reduction may help brides achieve their desired wedding day appearance.

No matter what procedures brides-to-be choose, experts say it's important to discuss recovery time with a licensed, board-certified plastic surgeon. After all, it would defeat the purpose of having some work done if bruising or scarring is visible on the big day!
